Mickoski says gov't will continue to subsidize electricity, shielding households against price shocks

Skopje, 28 November 2025 (MIA) – Commenting on an announced increase in electricity price, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Friday that the Government will continue to subsidize electricity, shielding households against price shocks.

In response to reporters' questions, Mickoski said the regulator decides on the price of electricity. Whether the electricity price will go up or down is a decision made by the regulator after receiving the price set by the supplier, adding the costs of the distributor, the transmission operator and finally the costs of organizing the electricity market, the PM explained.

"Although the Government was previously criticized, both in the EU Report and by part of the public, for not implementing one of the steps that are part of the Growth Plan, i.e. liberalization of the electricity market for households, we clearly stated that we would not implement that step, because if we implement it, the price of electricity would not be EUR 63.65 but EUR 100 per megawatt-hour. In such case, the total price of electricity for households would increase by a fantastic 50 percent," said Mickoski.

He stressed that the Government, despite all the political risk, will continue to subsidize the price of electricity in order to safeguard the standard of living.

"EVN Home is the supplier for 2026, and ESM, in line with the Government's policies, has provided the total quantities required, in accordance with the public procurement. The regulator decides on the final price. AD ESM submitted a target price of EUR 65 per megawatt-hour, which is three euros or about four percent more, but in no way above EUR 100, which is the market price," Mickoski added.
