Roma educational mediators introduced in secondary schools

Roma educational mediators introduced in secondary schools

Skopje, 24 December 2025 (MIA) – Ministry of Education and Science is continuing efforts to promote the inclusion of Roma students. Last school year, the number of Roma educational mediators in primary schools increased from 40 to 50, and this year mediators are being introduced in secondary schools for the first time.

According to the Ministry of Education and Science, 20 individuals were selected through a public call to work with secondary school students from the Roma community in addressing educational and other challenges they face in daily life. Today, they signed their employment contracts and met with Minister of Education and Science Vesna Janevska, who expressed gratitude for their willingness and readiness to contribute to efforts to increase inclusivity in the national education system.

“We have seen significant success with Roma educational mediators in primary schools. I expect you to be equally effective in this important work. Talk to parents, develop good relationships with school staff, include students who are not attending classes, and support them in their education and in accessing all other rights. A more educated population is vital, as knowledge is the main tool for success,” Janevska said, adding that a public call is currently open to engage additional mediators.

Janevska said that boosting the inclusion of Roma children in primary and secondary education is a key government policy, adding that alongside support through educational mediators and measures to prevent discrimination and segregation, scholarship support for their education is also being increased.
