Skopje, 21 November 2025 (MIA) — The Macedonian Film Archive has organized a retrospective dedicated to American independent filmmaker and experimental essay film pioneer Mark Rappaport, whose films will be screened at the Cinematheque on Nov. 22-27 at 8 pm.
"Rappaport is one of the most original authors of the independent film scene, known for his unique approach to documentary and feature films, his revolutionary video essays as well as his ability to rethink film history, acting mythologies and cultural artifacts of Hollywood and Europe," organizers said.
"This retrospective is a rare opportunity for the Macedonian audience to see a significant part of his oeuvre on the big screen," they said.
Organizers also noted Rappaport was fascinated with exploring film history, the mythology of Hollywood stars and the relationship between perception and identity.
"Rappaport remains a unique voice in contemporary film essay – skillfully combining archives, interpretation, fiction and pop culture to create works that resonate in the long term," they said.
The audience will also get a chance to talk to Rappaport via video link after one of the screenings as well as purchase the Macedonian edition of his "Book of Dreams."
The retrospective starts with a screening of his short video essay "I, Dalio" (2015), followed by a screening of "The Scenic Route" (1978). mr/
