Mickoski: EU accession process to remain merit-based with clear criteria

Skopje, 29 April 2025 (MIA) - The accession process must remain merit-based, guided by clear criteria and transparent assessments. This is not a favor to be dispensed arbitrarily but rightful recognition of efforts and reforms, Prime Minister and VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski said in his address Tuesday at the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress in Valencia.
According to Mickoski, the EPP gathering “underscores a shared vision – a Europe united by principles, strengthened by solidarity and driven by merit.” The PM stressed the Government remains committed to “conservative values, values of family, responsibility, economic freedom and respect for the rule of law”.
“These principles guide us domestically and inspire our engagement with Europe. We envision a common European future anchored firmly in these enduring values. However, honesty compels me to address the challenges we face openly. The European project promises equality, fairness and opportunity, but sometimes we experience a different reality. Our people – the proud Macedonian citizens I represent – have felt first-hand the weight of double standards, standards that undermine trust, dampen enthusiasm and risk weakening the very European spirit we champion. My nation has made significant sacrifices and reforms firmly committed to our European path, yet, repeatedly, we’ve witnessed shifting goal posts and additional conditions applied selectively, obscuring the transparency and fairness that Europe promises. This approach does not strengthen Europe, it weakens our collective credibility and diminishes our shared values,” Mickoski said.
According to Mickoski, it is key for EPP leaders in the EU institutions and the member states to become the driving force behind the enlargement of the EU with the Western Balkans.
“Your leadership and proactive engagement will significant enhance the credibility and effectiveness of the enlargement process. Let us clearly state, the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union is not merely an act of charity – it is a strategic imperative. It ensures peace, stability and security not only for our region but for Europe as a whole. The accession process must remain merit-based, guided by clear criteria and transparent assessments. This is not a favor to be dispensed arbitrarily but rightful recognition of efforts and reforms,” the VMRO-DPMNE leader said.
Mickoski said he believes the shared collective future lies in a united European family.
“It is our shared responsibility to uphold the integrity of this process, reaffirming our commitment to fairness and equality. The Macedonian citizens deserve to see that their dedication and sacrifice are respected and acknowledged. Together, let us renew our commitment: a Europe strong and unified, built on values, consistency and mutual respect,” Mickoski said in his address.
