Angelovska-Bezhoska - Kammer: Central bank independence a prerequisite for macroeconomic stability

Skopje, 17 February 2025 (MIA) - National Bank Governor, Anita Angelovska-Bezhoska, met with Director of the European Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Alfred Kammer, on the sidelines of the high-level conference "Dealing with geo-economic fragmentation", organized by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the National Bank said in a press release.

"Central bank independence is a public good that must be preserved. Central banks can successfully achieve their objectives only if they are independent, including by maintaining strong financial autonomy for effective policy implementation. The National Bank of North Macedonia has successfully addressed a number of recent challenges thanks to its independence and credibility, which must be preserved," Kammer told the meeting with Angelovska-Bezhoska.

The Governor expressed gratitude for IMF's technical assistance, as well as for the recommendations on amending the Law on the National Bank and aligning it with the best international practices to protect central bank independence.

"An independent monetary policy is a prerequisite in maintaining price and exchange rate stability, especially at times of challenges when the global environment continues to be characterized by high uncertainty and geopolitical risks," said Angelovska-Bezhoska.

The high-level IMF constituency meeting brought together governors, vice governors as well as top IMF representatives, discussing geopolitical risks and impacts on economies, as well as short-term and long-term policy solutions to mitigate possible negative effects. National Bank Vice Governor Emilija Nacevska also attended the conference, reads the press release.
