Mickoski: Despite significant concessions on EU path, Macedonia remains committed to protecting national interests, identity

Skopje, 20 February 2025 (MIA) — Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski on a visit to the Atlantic Council in Washington spoke about the future of transatlantic relations and the Western Balkans, discussing the country's relations with Greece and Bulgaria as well as its EU membership aspirations.

"During the conversation at the Atlantic Council, I stressed that despite making significant concessions so we can move forward in Euro-Atlantic integration, Macedonia has remained committed to protecting our national interests and identity. I especially pointed out the role of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg as a guarantor of human rights and the rule of law, highlighting that our country respects all its judgments," PM Mickoski wrote in a Facebook post.

Mickoski, as part of his visit to Washington, will also address the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, which opened Thursday.

US President Donald Trump and politicians from Argentina, Great Britain, Poland and Italy will address the three-day gathering of the conservatives, including Argentine President Javier Milei, former British Prime Minister Liz Truss, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The Macedonian prime minister, who is accompanied in the United States by Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski, met Wednesday with Alexander "Sasha" Kasanof, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans and Holocaust Issues in the US Department of State's Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs.

According to Mickoski, they discussed the situation in the country, the obstacles on its European integration path as well as the government's committment to reforms in key areas.

Mickoski and Kasanof also discussed recent developments in the Western Balkans. Topics included regional security, economic cooperation, good governance and democracy.

They confirmed their interest in continuing the political dialogue between the countries and strengthening bilateral ties through communication and institutional cooperation within the countries' Strategic Dialogue as well as through the partnership within NATO. mr/
