MPs vote to establish inquiry committee on institutional handling of tragedies and accidents

Skopje, 3 December 2025 (MIA) - With 84 votes in favor, and no abstentions or votes against, Parliament adopted Wednesday a decision to establish an inquiry committee tasked with determining the circumstances regarding actions taken by the institutions in relation to the tragedies and accidents in the country. Established upon proposal by MPs from the ruling majority, the committee will focus on the nightclub fire in Kochani, the fire at the modular hospital in Tetovo, and the Durmo Tours and Besa Trans bus accidents.

Parliament dismissed the initiative by opposition MPs from SDSM, Levica, and DUI, to establish an inquiry committee tasked with looking into the nightclub fire in Kochani, which received only 28 votes by MPs.

VMRO-DPMNE MP Antonijo Miloshoski said the established inquiry committee aims to identify all shortcomings related to the tragedies in the past period that resulted in human casualties. The findings would then be forwarded to the Government and the Public Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether there is political and criminal responsibility.

“This Inquiry Commission is being proposed due to the seriousness of the consequences of the tragedies that occurred in recent years: the accident in the nightclub in Kochani, the Besa Trans accident, the Modular Hospital in Tetovo, and the Durmo Tours accident near Laskarci. The purpose of such an Inquiry Commission is to review all shortcomings, and I believe that these tragedies, which claimed the lives of innocent people, share a common denominator. In all four tragic accidents, there is a pattern of institutional failures, dysfunction in much of the system, and the heads of certain institutions who created a dangerous trap that, unfortunately, led to the irreparable loss of 138 human lives. The goal is also that any findings obtained be sent to the Government and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which can help in locating political and criminal responsibility,” Miloshoski said.

According to Miloshoski, non-selectivity is needed for all tragic events in order to objectively assess and resolve systemic shortcomings and deficiencies.

“These four tragic events, which resulted in such irreparable damage for families and for the entire country, should not be reviewed selectively but rather as a whole, so that with objective assessments recommendations can be made to correct certain systemic deficiencies,” the VMRO-DPMNE MP said.
