U.S. visit historic and in citizens' interest, opposition creates distractions: PM

Skopje, 24 January 2025 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Friday the visit to the United States was historic and in the citizens' interest, adding that the opposition's accusations served as a distraction.

"This is the politics that the opposition and people close to it are using. I was the isolated Micko, then the isolated VMRO-DPMNE, I have heard it all during my seven years as party leader and seven months as PM, from the same people and the same communications center. The important thing is that the visit was in the interest of the citizens and the country. The citizens and Macedonia are the ones who benefit from this visit," PM Mickoski told reporters.

According to him, the opposition is attempting to create distractions by using a marginal topic.

"None of the things they are saying about the hotel or my activities in Washington are true. I stayed in a 3+ star hotel, in which Chris Pavlovski, the person who is part of the Forbes list and is worth US$ 1.2 billion, hosted a meeting that focused on how to digitize Macedonia is the best and most affordable way. They (the opposition) are trying to create a distraction from the important topics. All of these meetings will bring added value to the citizens and Macedonia. This is a historic visit at the highest possible level and I think we will have a meeting at the highest level very soon, but we will talk about this in a few months from now," Mickoski told reporters.

According to him, the visit was beneficial, fruitful and expects tangible results in the coming period.

"We will do our homework and fight for better infrastructure, new kindergartens and schools, a more competitive economy, better health and education, and we will win this battle. Nevertheless, we will also have to win in Washington, New York, Brussels, Rome, Paris, London, Berlin and other capitals. We must be vocal and present our arguments before interlocutors, about the Macedonian issue and the challenges we face, but also past struggles. I think we are on the right path. There are no instantaneous results but it is important that what we do is exclusively in the interest of the citizens and our homeland," said Mickoski.

The PM noted his assurance that Macedonia has been spotted by the people close to U.S. President Trump.

"I am convinced that Macedonia is now perceived by the Trump administration in political, geostrategic and economic terms," underlined Mickoski.
