Berlin, 18 December 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Matvey Safonov saved four times in the deciding shoot-out as the French club clinched a fourth 2025 trophy with a 2-1 victory on penalties over Brazil's Flamengo in the Intercontinental Cup final in Doha on Wednesday.
Freshly crowned FIFA World Player of the Year Ousmane Dembelé fired over in the decision on spot kicks, and Bradley Barlola did also not convert, while Vitinha and Nuno Mendes were on target for PSG.
But Safonov saved the penalties of Saul Niguez, Pedro, Leo Pereira and Luiz Araujo, with only Nicolas de la Cruz successful on Flamengo's first attempt.
The score between the Champions League winners PSG and Copa Libertadores champions Flamengo was locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia tapped PSG ahead in the 38th minute off Desire Doué's cross, after PSG had an early goal from Fabian nullified because the ball was out of bounds in the build-up.
Flamengo were level from Jorginho's penalty in the 61st after Marquinhos had fouled Giorgian de Arrasceata.
Marquinhos almost settled matters for PSG in stoppage time before Dembelé and Joao Neves came close in extra time.
PSG eventually prevailed in the shoot-out to add the trophy in the home country of their Qatari owners to those from the Champions League, Ligue 1 and Coupe de France earlier in the year. Luis Enrique's men were also Club World Cup finalists in their best ever season.
