Rubio says US-Europe relations at risk if shared values are lost
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned on Friday that Europe could lose its shared values with the US.
Washington, 20 December 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned on Friday that Europe could lose its shared values with the US.
Rubio was responding to a question about the new US national security strategy, in which the US government laments, among other things, an alleged loss of democracy and freedom of expression in Europe.
The foundation of the relationship with Europe is "the fact that we do have a shared culture, civilization, a shared experience and shared values and principles on things like human rights, on freedom, on liberty, on democracy," Rubio said at a press conference.
"If that's wiped out, because, for whatever reason, it's no longer a priority, I do think it puts a strain and threatens the alliance in the long term and in the big picture."
"Then you just have a straight up defence agreement," he said. "That's all you have."
In its new national security strategy, President Donald Trump's administration branded the political landscape in the EU as a threat to American interests, criticizing alleged democratic deficits and restrictions on freedom of expression.
