Cairo, 16 January 2025 (dpa/MIA) - A European monitoring team will arrive in the Egyptian capital early next week to help implement the Gaza ceasefire deal reached between Israel and Hamas, an Egyptian television reported on Thursday.

The delegation from the European Monitoring Mission is to work on instituting a mechanism to resume operations on the Palestinian side of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, the state-linked TV station al-Qahera News reported without giving further details.

In May last year, Israel took control of the Gaza side of the Rafah crossing with Egypt, in an operation that halted aid deliveries via the vital facility into the heavily populated coastal strip.

On Wednesday, mediators Qatar, Egypt and the United States announced a ceasefire-hostage release Gaza deal, set to come into effect on Sunday.
