Brussels, 17 January 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The European Commission announced on Friday it plans to support Syrians with €235 million ($242 million) in humanitarian aid in 2025.
The new funding is intended to help people living in Syria as well as Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries.
The money aims to finance food, shelter, clean water, health care and education, the commission said.
The announcement came as EU Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib visited Syria on Friday where she planned to meet with representatives of the transitional government and civil society organizations.
The EU and member states have provided €33.3 billion in humanitarian and economic support to Syrians over the past 13 years, according to commission figures.
In December, long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad was overthrown by a rebel alliance led by the Islamist group Haiat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) which now leads a transitional government.
