Blinken expects Gaza ceasefire to start on schedule

Washington, 16 January 2025 (dpa/MIA) - The US government assumes that the timetable of the Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal will be adhered to, despite a dispute over details.

"I fully expect that implementation will begin, as we said, on Sunday," said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at a press conference in Washington.

He stated that it was "not exactly surprising" that there were still details to be resolved at the end of such difficult negotiations, adding that efforts were currently underway to address them.

The press conference was repeatedly interrupted by angry hecklers making serious accusations about Washington's military support for Israel.

The mediator, Qatar, announced a breakthrough in the negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist Hamas movement on Wednesday evening.

The agreement between Israel and Hamas is due to come into effect on Sunday at 1015 GMT and is initially set to last for 42 days.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the Islamist organization on Thursday of refusing to agree to parts of the agreement. Hamas dismissed the allegation and affirmed its commitment to the agreement.
