MEMO launches Intraday Market

MEMO launches Intraday Market

Skopje, 6 May 2026 (MIA) - The National Electricity Market Operator MEMO officially launched the Intraday Market on Wednesday. MEMO CEO Zoran Gjorgjievski told Wednesday's launch event that today marks not just the opening of a new market, but a new energy perspective for the country, a perspective that signifies stability, trust and development.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanja Bozhinovska, Anže Predovnik, CEO of BSP Energy Exchange (Slovenian Power Exchange) and Management Board chair of ADEX Group, and Martin Martinovski, electricity and statistics expert at the Energy Community Secretariat also attended the event on Wednesday.

"Today marks a major milestone for the Macedonian electricity market, and furthermore, it is a signal that we are moving in the right direction towards a modern, integrated and market-oriented energy sector. Electricity is not an ordinary product. It has its own specificity: it is produced and consumed at the same time. This means that the system must constantly be in balance. That is why managing the electricity market requires exceptional precision, a high level of coordination and clear rules of operation," said Gjorgjievski.

MEMO CEO Gjorgjievski noted that such investments depend on the transparency and predictability of market outcomes. In addition, he mentioned challenges associated with new regulatory mechanisms, which can have a significant impact on the market, pointing out that "as an operator, we are closely monitoring European regulatory developments."

He added that MEMO is the electricity market operator and the driving force behind the measures aimed at accelerating the transition to a free market.

"Macedonia is not an energy island. We are part of the European energy system and we are essentially connected to it also in terms of the market, through our law. Therefore, instead of new obstacles, our market needs accelerated integration and the courageous removal of all barriers that hinder free trade. In an integrated European system, the Macedonian market must not be just an observer. Any artificial separation from European flows is contrary to the principles of free trade on which the Union itself was built. We are ready for market competition with fair and equal conditions for all," Gjorgjievski said.

To achieve this, MEMO has been operating at peak performance over the past period.

"As a top-notch service we implemented it in close cooperation with our strategic partners ADEX, relying on globally proven technology - Deutsche Börse's M7 platform. Yet, behind every software and behind every algorithm, it's people all the way. This success belongs to the MEMO team, whose sacrifice and selfless commitment made it possible. I would like to acknowledge, in front of all of you, the incredible work done by my colleagues. Their expertise and patriotism to deliver a project of this rank within the scheduled deadlines is what makes us proud. Also, I would like to express my gratitude to the Government and the Ministry of Energy for their support and vision in recognizing this project as a priority of great interest," Gjorgjievski pointed out.

The MEMO CEO stressed that Wednesday's 'go-live' is not the end of a process, but the beginning of a new phase.

"A phase of further development, deepening and integration of our market. A phase in which we will continue to build a system that is transparent, efficient and open to challenges," said Gjorgjievski.
