Bozhinovska in Athens with regional counterparts: Joint efforts toward an integrated and strong energy system

Skopje, 15 May 2026 (MIA) - Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanja Bozhinovska Friday participated in a joint ministerial meeting in Athens, Greece, alongside the energy ministers of Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria, Stavros Papastavrou, Dubravka Đedović Handanović and Deputy Minister Kiril Temelkov.

Bozhinovska’s Office said the meeting is unique in this format, with a focus on regional energy connectivity and strengthening energy cooperation among the countries in the region.

The ministers underscored the need for continued regional cooperation as a catalyst for infrastructure development, market integration in gas and electricity and greater flexibility and security of supply. Discussions were held at the technical level with government representatives and gas and electricity system operators. The excellent cooperation among the system operators of the four countries was highlighted, with an additional request to intensify their contacts and further deepen their cooperation in the coming period.

At the end of the meeting, it was agreed to expand the working groups with Serbia and Macedonia in order to enable them to work more effectively toward building an interconnected, more resilient and sustainable regional energy framework aligned with the goals of the European Energy Union.

Bozhinovska underlined the importance and necessity of coordination regarding infrastructure, markets and policies, assessing it as crucial for building a more resilient and competitive energy system in Southeast Europe.

“Today’s discussion comes at an important moment for our region. Southeast Europe is undergoing a complex energy transition, where security of supply, market integration and decarbonisation must advance together. Macedonia fully shares this vision. We are committed to strengthening energy security through diversification, accelerating the integration of renewable energy sources, and aligning with the EU internal energy market,” Bozhinovska said at the meeting with her regional counterparts, adding that no country can tackle these challenges alone.
