Skopje, 6 May 2026 (MIA) - Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanja Bozhinovska said Wednesday marks the opening of a new phase for Macedonian energy. Addressing today's launch event for the Intraday Market, Bozhinovska stressed that at a time when every MWh matters, the Intraday Market acts as a safety valve for our system, bringing the necessary flexibility.
"It allows our companies to react in real time - to adjust their energy needs just a few hours before delivery, reduce the costs of imbalances and manage their production and consumption more efficiently, which means lower costs for them and greater stability for the network. This is also particularly important for our energy transition. It opens wide the doors to renewable energy sources. Macedonia has the sun, but solar energy and wind are unpredictable. With the Intraday mechanism, such unpredictability is no longer a market risk, but a development opportunity," Bozhinovska said.
According to her, this is not the final destination, but only a starting point for the country's full integration into the European energy family. In the coming period, she noted, further development of market mechanisms, deepening of regional cooperation and joining the processes of merging markets in Europe will continue.

"The Intraday Market is a new phase in the development of our energy system and a key step towards the full liberalization and modernization of the energy market. We must admit that this process, at certain times, was seriously hampered by institutional inertia and lack of strategic focus. With clear political will and full commitment, we unblocked the process, strengthened coordination between institutions and together with MEMO and all partners involved, we managed to establish this mechanism, which is of vital importance for the country," the Minister stressed.
She said as of tomorrow, the focus shifts to full market coupling with neighbors.
"This will bring greater liquidity and price stability. At the same time, we will protect our companies from additional costs from the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which means saving millions of euros for export-oriented companies. In parallel, we will work to strengthen institutions and create conditions for even greater participation of the private sector," Bozhinovska pointed out, adding that the Energy Ministry remains committed to developing a competitive and transparent market, investing in energy infrastructure, supporting the green transition and ensuring regulatory stability and predictability for investors.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, National Electricity Market Operator MEMO CEO Zoran Gjorgjievski, Anže Predovnik, CEO of BSP Energy Exchange (Slovenian Power Exchange) and Management Board chair of ADEX Group, and Martin Martinovski, electricity and statistics expert at the Energy Community Secretariat also addressed Wednesday's event.
