Australia's Albanese orders security review after Bondi attack

Sydney, 21 December 2025 (dpa/MIA) - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has ordered a review of the country's intelligence and law enforcement agencies following a terror attack on a Jewish celebration in Sydney a week ago.
The review will assess whether the agencies have appropriate powers, structures and procedures in place to protect the public, Albanese said in a statement on Sunday.
The attack, which authorities say was influenced by Islamic State ideology, highlighted "the rapidly changing security environment" in Australia, the prime minister said.
"Our security agencies must be in the best position to respond," Albanese said, adding that the review would be completed and published in April.
Albanese has faced criticism from representatives of the Jewish community and from the opposition, who have accused his government of failing to do enough to protect Jewish people amid rising anti-Semitism in Australia.
The prime minister has acknowledged shortcomings in efforts to combat anti-Semitism and there are now calls for a formal inquiry.
Sunday marks one week since two gunmen opened fire on crowds at Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach, killing 15 people and injuring dozens. Most of the victims were Jewish people marking the first day of Hanukkah.
Investigators have identified the Bondi attackers as a father and son. The 50-year-old father was shot dead by police at the scene, while the 24-year-old son was injured and later charged with 15 counts of murder and 40 counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.
Albanese was due to attend a memorial service at Bondi Beach later on Sunday.
