Mickoski on Filipche's letters to EU: Anyone can send mail, but my sense is growing stronger

Skopje, 17 April 2026 (MIA) — Anyone has the right to write and send letters, but my sense is growing stronger, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Friday commenting on SDSM leader Venko Filipche's correspondence to foreign officials regarding the PM's recent suggestion that former government members might soon be investigated or arrested.

Earlier Friday, SDSM announced that Filipche had sent formal letters to the European Union, the European Commission, the European Parliament and various ambassadors. He told them there was "a serious breakdown" of democracy, the rule of law and the balance of power in the country.

"We have witnessed the dismantling of our system's separation of powers, rule of law and constitutional principles for a long time," Filipche wrote.

"There is a genuine and well-founded concern that the government is carrying out a coordinated strategy to interfere with the independence of the judiciary, which is a clear sign of growing authoritarianism," he wrote, pointing to Mickoski's recent comments as proof that he was planning to target his political rivals.

The prime minister recently said he had "a sense" that high-ranking members of the previous SDSM government, including former prime ministers and their families, would soon face prosecution. SDSM described his comments as "political revanchism" and "a direct threat to democratic pluralism." mr/
