Strong earthquake strikes near Papua New Guinea

Sydney, 5 April 2025 (dpa/MIA) — A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The quake hit at about 6 am (2000 GMT Friday) at a depth of 10 kilometres, USGS said. The epicentre was about 195 kilometres from the town of Kimbe, on the island of New Britain.

A tsunami alert was initially issued for Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands but was later removed by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

Minor sea level fluctuation may occur in some coastal areas near the earthquake over the next few hours, the centre said.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Papua New Guinea is situated on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on Earth.
