White House: Special Envoy Witkoff to talk with Putin again in Moscow

Washington, 22 April 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff plans to travel to Moscow again in the coming days to discuss ending the Russian war in Ukraine with President Vladimir Putin.

Such a meeting was announced for later this week by White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt. Witkoff has previously spoken personally with Putin several times and, following the discussions, has always spoken noticeably positively about the Russian president.

It was unclear whether Witkoff would still participate in peace talks on Ukraine in London on Wednesday. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also expected to attend the discussions. When asked whether Rubio would accompany Witkoff to Moscow and therefore not travel to London, Leavitt did not provide an answer. She referred inquiries to the US State Department.

Under US President Donald Trump, the US has undergone a significant policy shift and is no longer willing to support Ukraine in the long term in its defensive struggle against the Russian invasion.

Washington is primarily exerting pressure on Kiev to achieve a swift peace.
