Jordan bans Muslim Brotherhood group, to confiscate assets

Cairo, 23 April 2025 (dpa/MIA) – Jordan is banning the Muslim Brotherhood's activities and confiscating its assets after members of the group were linked to a plot to destabilize the country, Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya said on Wednesday.
Last week, Jordan said it has thwarted plots aimed at undermining national security, and arrested 16 people.
In a televised statement, Al-Faraya said authorities had discovered that members of the Muslim Brotherhood were engaged in destabilizing activities, including the storage of explosives and weapons in residential areas. Following the raids, the group attempted to destroy documents to conceal its activities, he added.
The minister said that all activities of the Muslim Brotherhood will be banned, its offices will be closed, even if they are in partnership with other entities, and assets are to be confiscated.
A court had ordered the dissolution of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2020, in what analysts saw as a bid to limit their group's influence in the kingdom, but the group remained instrumental in the political scene.
The Islamic Action Front political party – known to be linked to the Muslim Brotherhood – made significant gains in last year's parliamentary elections amid public anger in the US-allied monarchy against the ongoing Gaza war.
The kingdom also banned promoting or publishing content for the Muslim Brotherhood, al-Faraya said. It is not clear if this will affect the political party.
The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt around 100 years ago, where it is now banned and classified as a terrorist organization.
