Siljanovska-Davkova: Must preserve Macedonian language, defend it from denial now more than ever

Skopje, 5 May 2026 (MIA) - The Macedonian language is a foundation of our identity and uniqueness, a lasting witness to the historical continuity and a bearer of the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Macedonian people. It reflects generations of Macedonians through the centuries, through it, the national spirit is expressed, and its survival affirms our existence. It is our wonderful instrument for expressing love and ideas, creating artistic and scientific works, valuable achievements and eternal values, said President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova in a greeting extended Tuesday on occasion of May 5 - Macedonian Language Day.

According to Siljanovska-Davkova the country today has a clearer duty than ever before: “to preserve, nurture, and promote the Macedonian language, and to protect it and defend it from denial, because without it we aren’t who we are”.

“From the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius, through the visionary thought of Krste Petkov Misirkov, to the codification of the Macedonian standard language in 1945, faced with challenges and propaganda, the centuries‑long Macedonian aspirations for a state and language were realized,” the President said.

Siljanovska-Davkova added that this process was scientifically reinforced by the work of Blazhe Koneski, and the publication of the first grammar of the Macedonian language by Krume Kepeski in 1946, whose 80th anniversary is being marked by the country in 2026.

“The Macedonian language is not just a testament for the past, but also a vital creator of contemporary social development. That is why its proper and dignified use, as well as the consistent implementation of the Law on the Use of the Macedonian Language, represent the foundation of a functional democratic state,” President Siljanovska-Davkova stressed.
