SDSM to submit motion for parliamentary resolution against intake of migrants

Skopje, 10 December 2025 (MIA) — The SDSM opposition party leader Venko Filipche announced Wednesday that they would submit a motion in Parliament for a resolution calling for protecting the state interests against what he called "the planned intake of migrants."
"We will go to Parliament and demand a resolution to stop this," Filipche said.
According to him, the country cannot cope with an influx of migrants.
"Can Macedonia, a country that cannot pay salaries or maintain simple order at home, cope with such an influx of migrants? Can this be economically sustained? We all know the answers," he said.
"I call on the VMRO-DPMNE MPs to approve of this resolution," Filipche said, adding that adopting the document would "be enough" instead of "believing empty words."
Should the resolution not receive the support of lawmakers, he said the SDSM would push for other democratic mechanisms, including public protests.
"If VMRO-DPMNE does not come out and approve of this resolution, we will be forced to continue fighting with all democratic means. One of them is to call on all citizens to a large national protest. Together, united, side by side, to block the process of bringing migrants to Macedonia. The fight will not stop. This is a fight for Macedonia," he said.
Filipche also said the VMRO-DPMNE government was getting ready for elections in the spring to cover up the migrant deal talks held behind closed doors while the public learned about them through international media.
"Mickoski said yesterday that while he was in office as prime minister, there would be no tents for migrants. Which can only mean one of two things: First, that elections are being planned and he means his second term, after the elections. And second, he means that there will be no tents, in fact, but social housing," Filipche said.
He said the government had to sign the deal with the UK because of the six billion euro loan. He also compared the situation to Serbia's controversial lithium mining project.
"What this government is doing is the same as what is happening in Serbia. The same scheming as Vučić's. Let me give you just one example. First, they agreed to the lithium project, then they stopped the project and called elections. But after the elections, the lithium mining project started again, only to stop when the student protests over the canopy began," Filipche said. mr/
