Observance of Macedonian Language Day
- The Krste Misirkov Macedonian Language Institute, the Macedonian Language Department at the Faculty of Philology "Blazhe Koneski" and the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Tourism will be hosting a series of events on Tuesday to mark May 5 - Macedonian Language Day.
Skopje, 5 May 2026 (MIA) - The Krste Misirkov Macedonian Language Institute, the Macedonian Language Department at the Faculty of Philology "Blazhe Koneski" and the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Tourism will be hosting a series of events on Tuesday to mark May 5 - Macedonian Language Day.
Head of the Krste Misirkov Macedonian Language Institute Elena Jovanova-Grujovska, head of the Seminar on Macedonian Language, Literature, and Culture Kristina Nikolovska, and the Archbishop of Ohrid and Macedonia HH Stefan will deliver opening remarks at the event organized by the Institute.
Institute advisor Borche Arsov will give a special presentation on the Macedonian language and its Cyrillic letter.
The Macedonian Language Department at the Faculty of Philology within the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje will mark the Macedonian Language Day with a panel discussion on the Contemporary Macedonian Language and Macedonian Language in Legal Acts.
Head of the Macedonian Language Department Iskra Panovska-Dimova, Aneta Duchevska from the Faculty of Philology, Lidija Tanturovska from the Krste Misirkov Macedonian Language Institute, Matilda Sazdova from the Official Gazette of the Republic of North Macedonia and Tatjana Trendafilova from "Akademik" will address the panel.
On the occasion of the Macedonian Language Day, the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Tourism will mark Tuesday the 80th anniversary of the publication of the first Macedonian language grammar book, "Macedonian Grammar" written by Krume Kepeski.
Chair of the Committee on Culture and Tourism Saranda Imeri-Stafai and Parliament Deputy Speaker Vesna Bendevska will deliver opening remarks at the event, while MPs Daniela Hristova, Ivanka Vasilevska, Velika Stojkova-Serafimovska and Bisera Kostadinovska-Stojchevska and university professors Dimitar Pandev, Vasil Drvoshanov and Jovanka Kepeska will deliver keynote addresses on the importance of studying the Macedonian language in education, with a focus on Kepeski's grammar.
To mark the Macedonian Language Day, the Faculty of Information Sciences and Computer Engineering (FINKI) will organize a workshop on Tuesday entitled "Digital Language Resources for the Macedonian Language".
Macedonian Language Day was established in 2019 in honor of May 5, 1945, when the People's Government of Federal Macedonia at the time adopted the alphabet of the Macedonian language as an official letter, after the ASNOM session in 1944 declared Macedonian the official language. In addition, the Macedonian language was codified and standardized with the adoption of the first orthography of the Macedonian language, on June 7, 1945.
