Miloshoski: No refugee camps will be built in Macedonia
- VMRO-DPMNE Member of Parliament Antonijo Miloshoski has dismissed UK media reports that the country would host rejected asylum seekers from Great Britain.
Skopje, 7 December 2025 (MIA) — VMRO-DPMNE Member of Parliament Antonijo Miloshoski has dismissed UK media reports that the country would host rejected asylum seekers from Great Britain.
Responding to a reporter's question at a press conference Sunday, Miloshoski recalled a statement by British Ambassador Matthew Lawson that the British-Macedonian agreement was related to investments in security, trade and infrastructure and there had been no mention of migrant camps.
The VMRO-DPMNE MP stressed that the agreement was "one of the best and most serious documents the country has signed with a serious country like Britain."
"The Strategic Partnership agreement foresees funding for building infrastructure in Macedonia. True, railways, highways will be built, health and energy infrastructure projects will be built; but, unfortunately for the opposition trying to spin this, no refugee camps will be built," Miloshoski said.
"After leaving the EU, Britain has been making such agreements with all the Western Balkan countries but also with the EU itself," he said, adding that the deal proveded a legal basis to combat organized, illegal migration and protect borders.
"Britain is doing this through this additional mechanism, which is complementary to Frontex," Miloshoski said.
British media, including the Times, recently reported that the UK had entered negotiations with North Macedonia about hosting a "return hub" for rejected asylum seekers. The country had reportedly begun formal talks with the UK about the issue earlier in the fall. mr/
