Miloshoski: Amendments to Judicial Council law aim to enhance staff quality

Skopje, 11 December 2025 (MIA) - Reforms in the Judicial Council are one of the key issues for progress in the rule of law, and the changes to the Law on the Judicial Council aim to improve the quality of candidates, said Deputy Speaker of Parliament Antonio Miloshoski, who noted that the procedure for the new Judicial Council law has begun.

“Reforms in the Judicial Council are one of the key issues to make progress in the fight for the rule of law and in the prosecution. The amendments to the Law on the Judicial Council improve standards by raising the quality of those eligible to become Council members and by more clearly defining the often abstract and frequently misused term ‘distinguished lawyer.’ This should now be taken much more seriously. It is important to appoint members who can restore the Council’s authority, which currently falls below the judiciary’s already low rating,” Miloshoski told Kanal 5 TV late Thursday.

Miloshoski stated that in the past he has often criticized the presidents of the Judicial Council, because, in his view, it is ultimately the government that pays the price, not those who have failed to meet the expected obligations regarding the rule of law.

“That is why I have often expressed my opinions and certain criticisms toward the former and current presidents of the Judicial Council, including Vesna Dameva, toward all of them, because I believe that ultimately it is the government that pays the price, whether it is the previous or current one, and not those who fail to fulfill the duties reasonably expected by the public in relation to the rule of law,” Miloshoski said.

He added that more funds are planned for next year, but, as he said, “I believe that both judges and prosecutors will really need to justify them better.”
