Magnitude 6.7 earthquake strikes off Japan's north-east coast

Tokyo, 12 December 2025 (dpa/MIA) - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck off the north-east coast of Japan on Friday.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake hit near the east coast of Hachinohe at 0244 GMT at a depth of around 10.7 kilometres.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) put the depth of the quake at 20 kilometres. It issued a tsunami advisory for northern and north-eastern Japan, with a tsunami wave of up to 1 metre possible.
However, the USGS said based on available data there was no tsunami threat.
On Monday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 struck off the coast of Aomori prefecture in northern Japan.
After that quake, experts warned that further earthquakes, potentially even stronger ones, could follow in the days ahead.
