Macedonia maintains lowest fuel prices in the region, no new diesel VAT cut planned

Skopje, 4 May 2026 (MIA) - Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said Monday that the country maintains the lowest fuel prices in the region, along with reduced excise taxes on gasoline and diesel and reduced VAT on gasoline.

Mickoski said, when asked by journalists, that there are no plans for a new VAT reduction on diesel, emphasizing that according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the country ranks among the top three in Europe in terms of measures implemented compared to GDP.

“Citizens from neighbouring countries have increased fuel consumption at gas stations in Macedonia, in some days up to 30 percent. The government is proud to have an impact on improving the standard of living of citizens in neighbouring counties, including Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Greece and partially Bulgaria. As a country, we are a factor of stability and we continue with policies that will mean a better standard for citizens. We remain with reduced excise taxes on gasoline and diesel, reduced VAT on gasoline and we continue to have by far the lowest gasoline and diesel prices in the region,” Mickoski said in response to a journalist’s question after attending a memorial service at the St. Spas church in Skopje on the occasion of the 123rd anniversary of Goce Delchev’s death.

He informed that market inspectors are still conducting checks over suspicions that oil companies carried out fuel re-export, noting that at least one company is involved.

The checks, he said, are being carried out based on information received from individuals in that business. “It is our duty to verify every piece of information we receive. Depending on the findings, we will respond accordingly. The checks are still ongoing,” Mickoski said.
