Janevska: We all have responsibility to create environmentally educated generations

Skopje, 9 May 2025 (MIA) – The education system, through topics and content in the curricula, encourages young people to be environmentally educated, said Minister of Education and Science, Vesna Janevska, during the launch of the national three-day waste clean-up campaign at the Skopje Aqueduct on Friday.

President Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, municipalities and the Association of Local Self-Government Units (ZELS), as well as ambassadors, Red Cross volunteers and Pivara Skopje also joined the campaign on Friday.

"We all have a responsibility to create environmentally educated generations, thereby reducing the challenges they will face in the future," Janevska said.

She thanked the organizers and all the sponsors of the national waste collection action ‘Generalka Weekend’. She expressed hope that the campaign will continue, and future generations will treat nature as responsible citizens.

Austrian Ambassador Martin Pammer said he was happy that the 'Generalka Weekend' campaign has been going on for several years, noting that he was ready to take part in it.

"I believe we should be aware that this is important not only for you, for us as people who live here. It is also important for the image of the country and for tourism," said Pammer.

Kisela Voda Municipality Mayor and ZELS chair Orce Gjeorgievski said activities as part of the 'Generalka Weekend' campaign will continue in the future, motivating all citizens to get involved in this process and good deed.

"ZELS absolutely supported this entire initiative since several years ago, and practically today, not only in Skopje, but across the Republic, in several locations, where there are volunteers, ZELS, i.e. local self-governments, have joined to help in this process," Gjeorgievski said.

According to Chair Municipality Mayor Visar Ganiu, the fact that the action takes place at the Skopje Aqueduct, one of the most significant monuments of cultural heritage, represents a clear call for shared responsibility in preserving our historical heritage and building a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

"The participation of 100 volunteers from different municipalities shows that the spirit of solidarity and civic awareness is alive. We consider the clean-up not only as a practical act, but also as a symbolic and educational act through which we highlight common values, responsibility, care and respect for nature and history," Ganiu said.

The safety of the people involved in the action is ensured by Red Cross teams and volunteers who will be part of the activities at all 29 locations.

"All of us in this country should educate young people from an early age and make environmental awareness an agenda of our everyday lives. Such actions should be part of our culture of living," said Red Cross secretary Suzana Tuneva Paunovska.

Volunteers who are part of the campaign called for mobilization from everyone. "Nature is truly very important, and its preservation is our duty and our responsibility. I believe that every small step, every small action on our part leads to something big. And, change starts with us. If we all start little by little to make our environment at least a little more beautiful. It is a collective responsibility, and each of us should get involved in such an action, in order to make our environment more beautiful to live in," said Stefan Nikolovski from the Volunteer Centre Skopje.

The socially responsible company Pivara Skopje is also part of the 'Generalka Weekend' campaign. Snezhana Savikj Dimovska, head of the corporate policies and sustainability sector at Pivara Skopje, said the company has been a strategic partner of this campaign for the fourth year in a row, which also shows that companies have the power to initiate change.

"For us, supporting this campaign is not just simple support and numbers, but a kind of expression of our company vision, strategy, responsibility and culture," said Savikj Dimovska
