Hannibal Gaddafi released after ten years in a Lebanese prison

Beirut, 11 November 2025 (dpa/MIA) – Hannibal Gaddafi, son of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, was released from a Lebanese prison after spending ten years in detention, his lawyer and judicial sources confirmed on Monday.

"He has been freed," one of his lawyers, Nassib Chedid, told dpa.

His defence team said he was released on a 900,000 USD bail and his travel ban was lifted.

Gaddafi, born in 1975, was arrested in Lebanon in 2015 after illegally entering the country from Syria.

He was accused of withholding information about the disappearance of Shiite leader Musa al-Sadr in Libya in 1978.

The Shiite Amal militia in Lebanon holds the Gaddafi regime responsible for the disappearance of the Iranian-born cleric.

Libya has consistently denied any involvement in his disappearance.

In the past, there have been conflicting reports about the fate of the Shiite leader—some of which suggested that the late Libyan longtime ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi ordered his assassination.

The case of al-Sadr remains one of the most controversial and unresolved issues in recent Lebanese history and has repeatedly strained relations between Lebanon and Libya.
