Gashi – Varnes: Support for reforms and strategic partnership with U.S.

Skopje, 8 May 2026 (MIA) - Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi highlighted at a meeting Friday with the United States Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires Nicole Varnes Parliament's efficiency in adopting the legislation from the Reform Agenda and noted that the legislature remains committed to hosting quality discussion and promoting the strategic partnership between the two countries.
According to Parliament, Gashi acquainted the Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires with the legislature’s engagement in the fulfillment of priorities in the EU accession process. He underscored that creating a space for high quality discussion and adoption of laws in line with democratic standards remains a priority for the Parliament.
Gashi and Varnes also spoke about Parliament’s digitization processes as a prerequisite for increased functionality, transparency, and institutional security. The two also discussed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and the enhancement of cooperation with international legislative institutions.
“Speaker Gashi expressed sincere gratitude for the continued U.S. support, reaffirming the importance of the strategic partnership with the U.S. Varnes highlighted his efforts to build bridges of understanding between the political entities and different communities in the country. At the end of the meeting, the two reaffirmed the commitment to continue the close cooperation aimed at strengthening democracy, meritocracy, and functional institutions, as key values for the future and the country’s democratic development,” Parliament said in a press release.
