Skopje, 9 March 2025 (MIA) - A hostage crisis simulation drill took place Sunday at Skopje International Airport, involving special forces from the Ministry of Interior in cooperation with the airport security services of TAV Macedonia. The exercise aimed to test the capacities of national institutions and the economic operator TAV in handling such situations, as well as to assess the effectiveness of emergency response plans, communication protocols, and coordination among multiple stakeholders.
Public Security Bureau Director Aleksandar Janev noted that the exercise is being conducted at an exceptionally professional level, with an appropriate response speed. Such a scenario demonstrates how well the system is prepared to follow procedures and respond to real threats.
"The security of these critical infrastructure facilities, and of each individual, whether an employee or a passenger at the airport, is of utmost importance to us as police, but also to the government. By reinforcing and following the protocols established for such situations, their execution allows us to be recognized at a high level in terms of airport security within Europe and globally," said Janev, further noting that the inspections conducted so far have not raised any major issues.
He stressed that this is part of a set of simulation drills in various fields, where the police provide full support, both in terms of human resources and knowledge, to assure citizens that we are committed to their security.
TAV Macedonia Deputy General Manager for Operations, Pero Lupevski, highlighted that the event is of exceptional importance for the airport’s security and for passenger safety.
“With this exercise, we demonstrate preparedness, coordination, and professionalism in dealing with potential threats. The high level of training, the speed of response, and cooperation between services are crucial for the protection of airport operational security. This is not just training; it is a commitment to safety, trust, and successful prevention. As TAV Macedonia, we continue to invest in training and modernization to achieve and maintain the highest security standards,” Lupevski said.
The exercise provided a real, practical opportunity for assessing and evaluating the coordination of rapid response and the effectiveness of inter-institutional coordination between the departments at Skopje airport, the Interior Ministry, local and national emergency services, and other relevant parties and stakeholders.
The insights gained from the exercise will be used to improve training programs, update procedures for emergency situations and crises, further enhance security, ensure the safety of passengers and staff, and strengthen cooperation and coordination with the Interior Ministry.
