Trump: Iran doing 'poor job' of allowing oil through Strait of Hormuz

Washington, 10 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump has accused Iran of failing to stick to an agreement on a temporary ceasefire that included reopening the Strait of Hormuz to shipping.

"Iran is doing a very poor job, dishonorable some would say, of allowing Oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Thursday.

"That is not the agreement we have!" he added.

About an hour earlier, Trump demanded that Iran allow ships to pass through the strait without fees, warning Tehran against charging tankers for transit.

"There are reports that Iran is charging fees to tankers going through the Hormuz Strait — They better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!," the US president wrote.

Iran blocked the strait in early March in response to US and Israeli strikes, effectively halting the flow of oil and liquefied gas from the Gulf and driving global prices sharply higher.

After more than five weeks of conflict, Washington and Tehran agreed on a two-week ceasefire and the reopening of the waterway. Since then, very few ships have used the route and Iran has floated the idea of introducing transit fees for vessels using the strait.

Peace talks between the United States and Iran are due to begin in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Friday, with the aim of securing a permanent end to the war. The dispute over reopening the Strait of Hormuz is likely to be one of the more difficult issues in the talks.
