Tehran says US 'lack of political will' doomed peace talks

Tehran, 14 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) – Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian blamed the United States for the failure of recent peace talks in Islamabad, citing what he described as excessive demands and a lack of political will among senior US officials.

In a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Pezeshkian said the factors had prevented an agreement, Iran's state-run English-language broadcaster PressTV reported on Monday.

"Despite the expert understandings reached between the parties, the excessiveness and lack of political will of senior US officials have prevented the agreement from being finalized," Pezeshkian was quoted as saying.

He said that diplomacy remained Iran's preferred path, while fully safeguarding its national dignity and sovereignty.

The United States and Iran held direct talks over the weekend under Pakistani mediation, but the negotiations ended without a tangible outcome.
