Talks between US and Iran made 'a lot of progress,' Vance says

Washington, 14 April 2026 (dpa/MIA) - US Vice President JD Vance has said talks between the United States and Iran led to progress, despite no agreement being reached over the weekend.
"I wouldn't just say that things went wrong. I also think things went right. We made a lot of progress," Vance told Fox News on Monday.
"They moved in our direction, which is why I think we would say that we had some good signs, but they didn't move far enough."
The United States and Iran held 21 hours of direct talks in Islamabad over the weekend in a bid to reach to end the war in the Middle East.
Vance left open when and if further negotiations would take place.
"I think fundamentally, it's a question that would be best put to the Iranians, because the ball really is in their court."
Vance listed US control of Iran's enriched uranium and a verification mechanism to ensure it does not develop a nuclear weapon as two "red lines" for Washington.
He also said talks ultimately ended because Iranian negotiators were unable to seal an agreement, adding that the discussions revealed insights into who holds decision-making authority in Tehran.
Islamabad said it would continue to play its role to facilitate engagement and dialogue.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Monday that efforts are under way to iron out differences on "a few issues" between the US and Iran.
Pakistan has emerged as a key mediator between Tehran and Washington, playing a central role in brokering the two-week ceasefire announced last Tuesday.
