Skopje, 27 February 2026 (MIA) — First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for European Affairs Bekim Sali met Friday with EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner and discussed key issues related to the accession process of North Macedonia to the EU, migration management, border security and the fight against organized crime.

According to an official press release, meeting participants reaffirmed the government's firm commitment to implementing reforms as part of the Foundations cluster, placing a special focus on the rule of law, public administration and the protection of fundamental rights. 

Minister Sali also stressed North Macedonia's commitment to fulfilling the opening benchmarks and maintaining the reform momentum.

"Special attention was paid to the implementation of the EU's Entry/Exit System and its impact on professional drivers from the region," the release said.

Sali pointed out the need for "a pragmatic and proportionate solution" that would safeguard economic stability and ensure a seamless logistic flow, taking into account that North Macedonia is completely dependent on road transport, the release added.

Regarding migration and border management, meeting participants agreed that North Macedonia remains a reliable partner of the EU, through fully implementing the Frontex Status Agreement with the European Border and Coast Guard Agency and actively participating in the agency's operations.

Sali and Brunner confirmed the importance of deepening cooperation in the fight against organized crime, drug trafficking and migrant smuggling as well as strengthening the exchange of information and operational coordination. 

The deputy PM also reaffirmed North Macedonia's determination to completely align with European standards and deepen institutional cooperation on the path to full membership in the EU. mr/
