US and Iran meet in Oman over Iran's nuclear programme

Tehran, 12 April 2025 (dpa/MIA) – Senior representatives from Washington and Tehran are set to discuss Iran's controversial nuclear programme on Saturday in the Gulf state of Oman.

The US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to attend the opening of the dialogue, which is being mediated by the Sultan of Oman.

According to Iranian sources, the talks will be conducted indirectly through a mediator, although a direct meeting between Witkoff and Araghchi might take place.

The meeting in Oman, located on the Gulf, marks the first significant progress in years in the stalled negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme. US President Donald Trump has threatened Iran with military action if Tehran does not agree to a new deal to limit its nuclear programme.

During his first term as president, Trump pulled out of the Iranian nuclear deal that had been negotiated by his predecessor, Barack Obama.
