Murtezani on constitutional amendments: Process will be slower than six months, after all

Skopje, 16 April 2025 (MIA) - There is great commitment and attention in Brussels to support in finding a solution, said Minister of European Affairs Orhan Murtezani on the blockade of the country's European integration process, which depends on amendments to the Constitution, i.e. the inclusion of Bulgarians in it.
As regards the so far unfulfilled commitment of the Vlen (Worth It) coalition that constitutional amendments would take place within six months of the government formation, and the lack of more intensive communication with the new government in Bulgaria, Murtezani said "that process will be slower than six months, after all", adding that "we do not have such a luxury to stay in the waiting room".
"It's not that there are no attempts to establish contacts, but given our positions and the lack of trust, it is not that easy to establish contacts directly. Not that there are no attempts, not that there is no communication, even through the mediation of the European Commission, but that process will be a little slower, after all," Murtezani told Telma TV's Top Tema.
He said the European integration process is being dealt with on a daily basis, adding that "technically, we are much more informed about all potential solutions".
As regards protocols from intergovernmental sessions, he said they were binding documents and precisely because of that, the process must be much more careful, noting that if everything in the protocol is accepted, "then I don't know what the positions will be and what the reaction of the citizens will be".
"Because the reaction of the citizens to that way of conducting negotiations was a clear message in the last parliamentary elections. What we need to do is be committed every day to work on the implementation of the reforms because only in that way do we give a signal that we are seriously interested, and insist all the time on finding a quick solution in order to seize the moment," said the Minister of European Affairs.
