Kochani, 1 February 2025 (MIA) - A day after the citizens’ boycott of markets due to the surging prices of food products, Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said inspectors are conducting a detailed analysis on the ground in all larger supermarkets, with the initial findings, he said, confirming the Government’s concerns over the prices.
“I should have more information from Monday, but I can say that we are in all larger supermarkets and conducting a detailed analysis. What I can say now is that some of our concerns or fears, are becoming a reality, so we are acting, and we will continue to act. As a Government, we have a duty to protect the living standard of the citizens,” Mickoski said in answer to media questions at an event in Kochani granting social housing tenancies to vulnerable families.
At the same time, the PM said the Government would also be careful not to disrupt the principles of the market economy, stressing that all stakeholders should work together “so they can come out as winners in this whole situation”.
A boycott of markets was held Friday for the first time in the country in protest of the constantly surging prices of basic food products. The calls for boycott of shops nationwide came following a similar initiative in Croatia, which has spread across the region to include Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Slovenia.
