Launch of activities to reopen Markova Noga border crossing

Resen, 12 March 2025 (MIA) – After more than 50 years, construction works to reopen the Markova Noga border crossing point on the Macedonian-Greeek border will start.

The project involves the construction of a Customs Administration building, about 360 square meters, and the construction of office premises for an insurance company, water tanks, public restrooms, water treatment station, substation, three new access roads parking. The border crossing point will be built as part of the EU4PRESPA project.

PM Hristijan Mickoski, EU Ambassador Michalis Rokas and UNDP Resident Representative Armen Grigoryan will attend the cornerstone laying ceremony on Wednesday.

UNDP’s Grigoryan in an interview with MIA says the construction of this border crossing is one of the priorities of UNDP.

The opening of this border crossing point is expected to pave the way for economic, tourist cooperation and cultural exchange between the two countries. The reopening of the border crossing was announced with the signing of the Prespa Agreement in 2018.

The laying of the cornerstone for the Markova Noga border crossing marks a new era affirming that the Prespa region is considered important for both the country and Europe, said EU Ambassador Rokas while touring Resen on Tuesday.

According to a legend of the locals, the border crossing "Markova noga" is named after the site "Markova noga" where a stone is located, considered a miracle of nature, which is believed to preserve the footprint of King Marko. The stone with Marko’s footprint is exhibited in the watchtower of the same name next to the border crossing.
