Greek diplomatic sources: Gerapetritis highlighted clear interpretation of Prespa Agreement that applies to everyone (erga omnes) at FAC meeting

Athens, 24 June 2024 (MIA) - In his address at Monday’s Foreign Affairs Council Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis mentioned “Skopje’s offensive behavior during the elections and afterwards” and pointed to “the clear interpretation of the Prespa Agreement that applies to everyone (erga omnes)”, Greek diplomatic sources told Greek media, MIA’s Athens correspondent reports.

According to the same sources, at the meeting of EU foreign ministers, the Greek top diplomat noted that “selective application of international law is impermissible”, but also noted that the future of the Western Balkans lies in Europe, under the basic condition of “faithful observance of European legislation and international law”.

At the working lunch with the EU’s foreign ministers and their Western Balkan counterparts, Gerapetritis reiterated that the European perspective is a one-way street but should be founded on the criteria and achievements of the countries on three levels: European legislation; respect for fundamental rules, democracy, rule of law, protection of minorities, and faithful application of international law.

Additionally, according to the same sources, following an intervention by Greece and swift diplomatic action, in his address the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, explicitly reiterated that the principle pacta sunt servanda (the agreements are binding and should be respected) is a prerequisite for the European perspective of the Western Balkans.
