Glavchev: Skopje and Sofia should ease tensions

Washington, 10 July 2024 (MIA) - At yesterday's meeting with Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, we discussed the need to normalize mutual relations and restore them to the level of 2017 when the Friendship Treaty was signed, Bulgarian Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev said ahead of Wednesday's NATO Summit in Washington.

"We both share that view, so we'll see what happens. There is nothing better than nice and good relations between neighbours. It can even be said that we are more than neighbours with the Republic of North Macedonia," Glavchev added.

The Bulgarian PM said tensions in mutual relations should be eased, primarily in statements given, because there are no tensions between the citizens and peoples of the two neighbouring countries, and if politicians do not help develop such relations, they should neither hinder them.

According to him, when cooperation is at a satisfactory level, connection should start to develop in all aspects, including in transport, the economy, etc.

"However, the obligations undertaken should also be fulfilled. Here I am not only talking about North Macedonia, but all the Western Balkan countries. Our position is also the European position that all EU candidate countries must comply with the requirements," Glavchev added.
