Gjorgjievski: Drisla landfill in exceptionally poor condition, will advocate strongly for its transformation

Skopje, 12 November 2025 (MIA) - The Drisla landfill in Skopje is in an exceptionally poor condition, and we will strongly advocate for it to be transformed in the example of other modern European regional waste processing and treatment centers, the Mayor of Skopje, Orce Gjorgjievski, told a workshop Wednesday.

In his address at the Creating Green Jobs in North Macedonia expert workshop, Gjorgjievski said the country needs to fully commit itself to waste sorting and making more efficient use of waste as a resource.

“At the very beginning of my term, I fully committed myself to dealing with the chaos and waste in the capital, something that was an issue for many years. I am convinced that Skopje, but also the other municipalities, in cooperation with the Government, will start to deal with waste in a much better and more effective way,” Gjorgjievski said.

He highlighted the importance of nongovernmental organizations working on collecting, sorting, and treating waste.

“As an example, I would highlight the installation of special containers for separate collection of glass waste, plastic, paper, and similar materials. An interesting initiative is the placement of machines for recycling plastic bottles in primary schools, as well as the possibility of paying for parking by collecting bottles. Another example is in Kisela Voda, where bins for waste sorting have been placed at the entrances of residential buildings,” the Mayor stressed.

The workshop Creating Green Jobs in North Macedonia is organized by the Austrian Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, and the Austrian Embassy in Skopje.
