Skopje, 26 December 2025 (MIA) - The first meeting of representatives of parliamentary parties and experts on the Electoral Code is set to take place in the second half of January, as agreed at yesterday's meeting of whips with Justice Minister Igor Filkov, Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi has told MIA.
"We discussed the need for sooner adoption of a new, improved Electoral Code. We initiated the setup of a working group and the Government has responded. We were told at the coordination meeting that the text of the Electoral Code is nearly finished," says Speaker Gashi.
According to him, whips agreed that the Electoral Code is adopted through consensus but a timeline for its passing is still unavailable.
"The Ministry of Justice is heading this process and they will call on all political parties to nominate two representatives each. We agreed on the need for full consensus for the Electoral Code. Once we have the text, we'll see if it is an entirely new Electoral Code or if it's amended, followed by remarks from political parties and their alignment, so that we come to the final solution," says Gashi.
The Speaker says the idea is for the talks to begin in January and to harmonize positions at an expedited pace.
The MIA interview with Speaker Gashi will be released on Saturday.
