Skopje, 18 February 2025 (MIA) - Death threats have been sent to the official email address of Parliament Speaker Afrim Gashi, his Office said Tuesday, adding they have been reported to the Interior Ministry.
“The Speaker of Parliament condemns in the harshest possible terms all forms of threats and pressure on public office holders and remains committed to the principles of democracy and the rule of law,” Gashi’s Office said in a statement.
The Interior Ministry told MIA they are investigating the case, without providing details on the content of the threat.
According to media reports, the Speaker of Parliament received a threatening email concerning the constitutional amendments and the inclusion of Bulgarians to the country’s Constitution.
According to the reports, Gashi received the message after he told an interview Monday that steps can be taken towards a solution of the dispute after the election of a new Government in Bulgaria, but that success in the talks cannot be expected immediately.
"Seeing this problem through the prism of mutual interest of both countries and nations, I believe it is beneficial to solve the dispute from the aspect of regional security, namely remove the Bulgarian veto. I think that Bulgaria would not lose anything from this, but on the contrary, gain a lot. Nevertheless, we have to wait for tensions to calm down and then present arguments at the table, so they perceive our context as well. If the U.S. and Brussels are also willing, I am certain we need only a little push to untie this knot," Gashi said in the interview.
