Beirut, 31 March 2026 (dpa/MIA) - An Indonesian United Nations peacekeeper was killed and another seriously wounded when a projectile exploded at a UN position in southern Lebanon on Sunday, the organization said.
"No one should ever lose their life serving the cause of peace," the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said on social media platform X early on Monday.
"We do not know the origin of the projectile. We have launched an investigation to determine all of the circumstances," it added.
"Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law and of Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes," the mission said.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the deadly incident and expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, his spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said.
"This is one of a number of incidents that have jeopardized the safety and security of peacekeepers, including over the past 48 hours," Dujarric said.
"Once again, the Secretary-General calls on all actors to uphold their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property at all times."
Fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah has flared up again in Lebanon amid the Iran war, with UN peacekeepers repeatedly caught in the crossfire along the border.
The United Nations has deployed peacekeepers to the border region since 1978. The mission currently includes around 7,500 troops from nearly 50 countries.
