Washington, 4 February 2025 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump signed a budget package into law on Tuesday, ending the partial shutdown of government operations.
The House of Representatives had previously approved the package in a close vote. The upper chamber of the US Congress, the Senate, had already given its approval.
The approval of the budget package secures funding for the majority of the government apparatus until the end of September - except for the Department of Homeland Security. The package provides only temporary transitional funding for the department as a compromise solution.
Among its responsibilities are the controversial operations by federal agencies targeting migrants. The funding is due to expire next Friday.
The president called for swift action on Monday, writing on Truth Social that he would "immediately" sign the bill into law once it had passed through Congress.
The shutdown, which lasted four days, was the second of Trump's second term and significantly shorter than the previous one, which ended in November after 43 days — the longest government shutdown in US history.
The latest budget issues follow the fatal shooting of two US citizens in Minneapolis during aggressive deportation enforcement pushed by Trump's administration.
That prompted calls from Democrats in the Senate to block the budget bills, since they contained funding for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, which is under the Department of Homeland Security and which has been conducting the immigration raids.
