Trump: Meeting 'of various parties' on Greenland to be held in Davos

Washington, 20 January 2026 (dpa/MIA) - US President Donald Trump said that "a meeting of the various parties" regarding his bid to control the Arctic island of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, would be held in Davos.

Trump, in an early Tuesday post on Truth Social, said he had spoken about the meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in a phone call.

He did not specify who would take part in the talks in Davos, where the official programme of the World Economic Forum began on Tuesday.

Trump is expected to arrive in the Swiss town on Wednesday and to give a speech on the same day.

The president wants to annex the Danish island to the United States. The government in Copenhagen has ruled out a sale and is actively supported by European powers in its resistance to Trump's plans.

In his post, Trump reiterated that the island of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, "is imperative for National and World Security."

"There can be no going back — On that, everyone agrees" Trump wrote.

On Saturday, Trump announced that, from February 1, he would impose punitive tariffs of 10% on imports from Denmark and seven other European countries - and rising to 25% from June 1 - if no resolution is reached to his satisfaction, which would be the "complete and total purchase" of Greenland.

European Union countries are hurrying to find a joint response to the threat, including the possibility of imposing additional tariffs on a list of goods with a total trade volume of €93 billion ($108 billion).
