VMRO-DPMNE, Vlen, ZNAM MPs file motion to set up inquiry committee into tragedies that hit country in recent years

Skopje, 24 November 2025 (MIA) - VMRO-DPMNE, Vlen and ZNAM MPs filed a motion in Parliament on Monday to set up a committee of inquiry into the circumstances of the actions of institutions regarding the tragedies and accidents in the country. VMRO-DPMNE MP Bojan Stojanoski told a press conference that the purpose of the inquiry committee is to determine the responsibility of officials, holders of public offices and other related persons, as well as to determine the circumstances of the actions of institutions regarding the Kochani nightclub fire, the Tetovo modular hospital fire, the "Durmo Tours" bus crash in Laskarci, and the "Besa Trans" bus accident in Bulgaria.

Stojanoski said that 77 MPs have signed the motion, which is proof that they do not want to politicize these tragic events, but rather they want to help those affected get justice.

"All questions must be answered, and all cases should see the necessary epilogue," said Stojanoski.

The inquiry committee will be set up on the basis of Article 124, paragraph 5 of the Parliament's Rules of Procedure. It will consist of 15 members and their deputies, including: seven members from VMRO-DPMNE, two each from SDSM, the European Front and Vlen, and one each from ZNAM and Levica, and it would be chaired by an MP from the ranks of the opposition parties.

Stojanoski noted that the format, i.e. composition, is a key difference, which makes this committee legitimate, unlike some other attempts in the past.

"The committee will prepare findings that will be the basis in opening a procedure to determine the responsibility of all those involved, who have contributed to the events, or have failed to contribute to preventing these tragic events," said Stojanoski.

He called on MPs from other political parties to join the motion and actively contribute to the committee's work.

Stojanoski stressed that there are three key differences between their motion and the one filed by SDSM and Levica, which the Parliament Speaker sent back for revision earlier on Monday following coordination with the parliamentary groups. The first difference is the respect for the Rules of Procedure regarding the composition of the committee, the second is that they seek responsibility also for those who the committee will conclude they have committed an offence, and they believe that this case should not be politicized.

"It should be expanded to all tragedies, not just one, because in the past period we could see that even those people who are covered by court verdicts do not serve the legal sentences, while those who are damaged have the feeling that the real culprits are not brought to justice," said MP Stojanoski.

He added that the expectations are to bring the real culprits to book and have the system recomposed so that such events do not happen again. Stojanoski said their goal is to create a system that will not allow such tragedies to happen.

The motion is expected on the agenda of the next plenary session. According to Parliament announcements, a new parliamentary session will be held next week, i.e. at the beginning of December.
