Leipzig, Germany, 4 May 2026 (dpa/MIA) - Two people are dead and two others seriously injured after a car drove into several people in central Leipzig on Monday, a city spokesman said.

The driver of the car was taken into custody and no longer poses a threat, police said.

Police earlier described the situation as "dynamic" with the background to the incident still unclear. 

Numerous emergency services, including the fire brigade, ambulances and police were at the scene on Grimmaische Strasse, which leads from the central Augustusplatz into Leipzig's pedestrian zone. 

The university is nearby, as is St Nicholas Church, a Leipzig historical landmark.
